As early autumn arrived at Nanyan Garden, a new academic journey began. On the morning of September 4, the Graduate Student Union of the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering (SECE), Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, held its recruitment briefing in Room 105, Building C. The event helped members of the incoming Class of 2026 learn more about the Graduate Student Union and settle into campus life. Representatives from each department met with new students, shared their experiences, introduced their work, and offered a glimpse into the vibrant and rewarding graduate experience ahead.
Getting to Know the Graduate Student Union: Building a Platform for Growth
At the start of the briefing, Graduate Student Union President Li Shuo introduced the organization’s structure, role, and service mission to the new students. The SECE Graduate Student Union serves as an important bridge between the School and its students, with student needs at the heart of its work. It supports the School in student affairs while organizing a wide range of high-quality campus activities, creating opportunities for graduate students to connect, grow, showcase their strengths, and move forward together.
Li Shuo then outlined the responsibilities and signature initiatives of the Executive Committee and the six functional departments. The clear overview gave new students a comprehensive understanding of how the Graduate Student Union operates and set the stage for the departmental presentations that followed.
Working Together, Turning Care into Action
Li Shuo next introduced the day-to-day work and signature activities of the General Affairs and Organization Department. Themed Party and Youth League activities, spring outings, team-building events, and festival celebrations were brought to life through photos from previous years. Behind every successful event are careful planning, resource coordination, on-site management, and disciplined execution by the department.
The presentation showed how thoughtful ideas can be transformed into meaningful experiences through close collaboration, while also highlighting the department’s commitment to bringing people together through activities and serving students with care.
Capturing Moments, Telling the SECE Story
Han Qing, Director of the Publicity and Communications Department, then took students behind the scenes of the School’s communications work. From refining social-media stories and capturing event highlights to designing posters and editing videos, every task helps shape the character and memorable moments of campus life. The department documents life at SECE, shares the energy of its students, and tells the School’s stories. It is also a space where writing, photography, visual creativity, and aesthetic ideas can flourish.
Beyond its core work in writing, photography, design, and video editing, Han Qing also shared a practical guide to campus life. The introduction covered key locations such as teaching buildings, dormitories, and the library; transport links, dining, and fitness facilities; as well as venue reservations, useful official social-media accounts, and contact information for School offices—helping new students navigate many of the questions that arise at the beginning of university life.
Bringing Energy to Campus Life
Sun Tanqing, Deputy Director of the Sports and Culture Department, introduced a variety of signature activities and gave new students a lively sense of the Graduate Student Union community. Events such as the Freshers’ Cup, Welcome Gala, Fun Sports Day, and SECE Sports Season showcase the energy and enthusiasm of campus life. From early preparation and targeted training to on-site support and event execution, each successful activity reflects the dedication and teamwork of department members. Sun Tanqing also shared tips for booking sports facilities and recommended nearby dining, leisure, and sightseeing options in Shenzhen, offering new students a practical and enjoyable guide to exploring campus and the city.
Listening to Students, Safeguarding Their Rights and Interests
Lin Jie, Director of the Student Rights and Services Department, focused on everyday campus issues closely related to students and introduced the department’s work in detail. Publicly funded medical reimbursement, psychological counseling services, student representative work, and the campus second-hand exchange platform are all part of students’ day-to-day experience. Drawing on real-life scenarios, Lin Jie explained how to access these services and where to seek help, enabling new students to quickly become familiar with available support and rights-protection resources. Listening to students, communicating their needs, and helping solve practical problems remain at the core of the department’s mission.
Advancing Academic Engagement, Connecting with the Frontiers
Liu Yida, Director of the Academic Practice Department, highlighted the department’s role in connecting campus, academia, and industry through a diverse range of past activities.
Company visits bring students closer to industry frontiers and help clarify career directions; the “Academic Star” selection showcases research achievements and encourages intellectual exchange; inter-university study visits promote experience sharing and broaden perspectives. Together, these academic and practical activities help students look beyond the campus, deepen their professional interests, and strengthen their overall capabilities.
Let Creativity Take Flight and Ideas Take Shape
Qiao Tianlu, Deputy Director of the Creative Design Department, used words and images to introduce new students to the dynamic and diverse world of creative design. Projects such as SECE cultural and creative products, sports-day parade planning, visual design for the opening ceremony, and Lunar New Year event arrangements for faculty and staff illustrate the full creative process—from the first spark of inspiration and concept refinement to final implementation. Fresh ideas and engaging formats make the School’s culture visible, memorable, and enduring, adding color and character to campus life.
The Creative Design Department welcomes not only students with professional design experience, but also anyone who enjoys observing, collaborating, and experimenting with new ideas. Together, members use creativity to enrich campus life and bring youthful imagination to life.
Smart Campus Services for a More Convenient Student Experience
Toward the end of the briefing, Li Shuo introduced “Zhixin · SECE,” an AI-powered student assistant developed by the SECE Graduate Student Union, highlighting the School’s blend of student-centered service and technological innovation. Designed specifically for SECE students, the AI service covers a wide range of campus matters, including new-student registration, graduation procedures, household-registration and student-organization transfers, awards and honors, employment agreements, medical insurance, campus activities, and psychological services. It provides one-stop answers to common questions, making campus services faster and more convenient. A live demonstration allowed new students to experience firsthand how AI can make campus life easier, bringing the recruitment briefing to a close with a distinctly SECE touch.
